Book Review- Growing Up Church of Christ

October 18, 2011

I have to admit, I was a bit apprehensive about reading and reviewing the new book Growing Up Church of Christ by Michael Allen.

My fear was that it may be a public forum to air dirty laundry on a well known family amid the churches of Christ. Jimmy Allen, as you probably already know, is an icon among some ministers in the church and father to the writer.

In fact, a few years ago when I was talking to my grandfather (himself a preacher in the churches of Christ) about a book compilation I was working on for evangelists one of the first things my grandfather said was, “You need to get Jimmy Allen to participate!”

However, my fears were put to rest as I began reading and feel rather foolish for ever thinking that in the first place.

As Mike Allen tells you at the beginning, the book is a memoir- a collection of thoughts and stories by a preacher’s kid from Searcy, Arkansas. He also allowed friends to submit their accounts on a variety of topics ranging from VBS to hot button issues such as instrumental music and the woman’s role.

Anything and everything you’ve wanted to know about the church of Christ is there in quick and easy to read blurbs. The good, the bad, and the ugly are there, also. Some may scoff at certain parts. Some should prepare to have feathers ruffled. And there will be those who find themselves feeling a bit saddened at the end.

Overall, if you “grew up church of Christ”, you’re going to be amused and find yourself having many of the same memories that Allen shares.

I laughed, cringed, and even shed a tear or two while we strolled down memory lane but thankful for a chance to peek inside another PK’s childhood.

Haven’t got the book yet but it is now on my wish list! Thanks for a good review! I remember Jimmy Allen from my childhood and attending those massive campaigns he would preach at – some golden memories!
